Conventions cater to new, old fans

Fans are in for some real treats over the next two weekends. Big fan conventions in Arlington, Texas and Totowa, New Jersey bring fans close to the wrestlers from the past and the present.

In Arlington, it's a celebration of all things World Class and Mid-South. Freebirds Michael Hayes, Buddy Roberts and Jimmy Garvin, Missy Hyatt, Kevin von Erich and the elusive Missing Link (Dewey Robertson) will all be making appearances at Wrestlecon an all-wrestling autograph, memorabilia, collector's show and reunion August 15, 16 and 17th at the LaQuinta Inn. See their web site at www.wrestlecon.com for more info.

Also scheduled to appear at Wrestlecon are Terry Ray Gordy Jr. (Terry Gordy's son), 'The Queen of Extreme' Francine; Killer Karl Kox; Shawn Stasiak, Candi Devine; Playboy Buddy Rose; The Angel of Death; Chris Youngblood; Killer Tim Brooks, Lollipop from TNA, and a variety of Texas-based indy wrestlers.

Taking a cue from similar conventions run for sports fans and collectors, all guests will charge a fee for their signatures. Tickets for Wrestlecon can purchased by calling Autographs Ink (www.autographsink.net) at 817-577-4445 or in person at the store. Admission to the show is $10 per day or $18 for a 2-day pass (all prices in US dollars). The convention will kick off Friday night with a cocktail party for the wrestlers, VIP ticket holders (no autographs) and dealers. Saturday and Sunday the show is open to the general public. There will be a dinner Saturday night as well (no autographs) - dinner tickets are $65 each and must be purchased by August 5.

The following weekend in Totowa, New Jersey, Fan Slam!, The Wrestling Fan Festival, will be at the Holiday Inn on Rt. 46 West. Fan Slam! Is just a one-day affair, on Saturday, August 23rd, from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Their web site, www.fan-slam.com has more details.

Like WrestleCon, the show has some major names. Bobby 'The Brain' Heenan will be there along with his old charge Paul Orndorff. Ricky Steamboat, J.J. Dillon, Justin Credible, Johnny Valiant, Crowbar and Kevin von Erich round out the major names. Ring of Honor wrestlers, announcer/writer Gary Michael Cappetta, and even the Champions of the Galaxy games people will be there. Total Wrestling magazine editor Bill Apter will host a Q&A session with the wrestlers.

Fan Slam! tickets are $8 at the door, $5 in advance, which gets you into everything but the Q&A session. A Golden ticket is $20 at the door, $15 advance, and gets you into everything. Autographs and Polaroid photos of the wrestlers are $10 each. A super Ticket for $75 gets you into the show, autographs and/or Polaroids and into the Q&A session. Tickets can be purchased ahead by emailing FANSLAM@aol.com or calling (973) 684-3137.

SLAM! Wrestling will have a report from the Wrestlecon, and is interested in a report from Fan Slam! If you are interested in filing a report, email Greg Oliver.
