Smackdown!: McMahon challenges Gowan
By DALE PLUMMER -- SLAM! Wrestling

After taking last week off to celebrate the birth of the U.S. of A. by wolfing down some burgers and sausages, I\'m back! I would like to thank Mr. Clevett for filling in, even though I think he took some shots at me. Do I smell a feud coming on?

As most of you know Smackdown! comes to us from Toronto this week, and many of our own Slam! Wrestling staff was in attendance, including Stephen Laroche, who gave us a preview of tonight\'s show. The televised version of Smackdown! starts with a recap of the Zach Gowan\'s win last week. The WWE offers us only still photos, though? I\'m left scratching my head; was Smackdown! a PPV last week?

Kurt Angle starts the show off with a huge pop. Even Canadian\'s love Kurt Angle; he\'s an international sensation, now, and all it took was a broken neck. Angle tells Brock Lesnar and Big Show to iBring it on!i for their triple threat match at Vengeance. John Cena interrupts the Olympian, telling Angle that he is the new main event. Angle decides to play with Cena a little, calling on the human beat box, Brian Hebner. Angle goes freestyle, and I wish I could write faster. If anyone has a transcript of his rap please send in to me. Angle drops the funny stuff, though, after Cena threatens to waste him. Both men are nose to nose when the Big Show lumbers to the ring. Angle makes the fatal mistake of turning his back on Cena. The master of thug-a-nomics takes advantage, hitting Angle with the F-U. Big Show picks up the pieces of the Olympic champ and promptly chokeslams him back to the mat.

Match #1: Fatal Four-way Tag match #1 Contender match FBI vs. The Bashaam Bros. vs. the APA vs. Rey Misterio and Billy Kidman

I guess the Kidman-Misterio feud will have to wait another week. Anyway, the APA and FBI take the match outside the ring. The two teams fight each other up the ramp, neither caring that they are getting counted out. After the break, we see footage of the FBI and APA beating the snot out of each in the locker room. Nunzio ends the festivities quickly with a steel chair to Bradshaw and Simmons. Back in the ring, Kidman tags in a starts cleaning house. Doug Basham tries for a powerbomb, only to have it reversed into a facebuster. Kidman climbs the ropes to try a shooting star press, the move that put him on the shelf several months ago. After some interference Kidman hits the move, but Danny Bashaam breaks up the pin. Doug recovers and hits an inverted DDT on Kidman, but can\'t put him away. Misterio tags back in and connects with the 619. He then idrops the dimei on one of the Bashaams (I still can\'t tell them apart) and pins him for the 1-2-3. Rey Misterio and Billy Kidman are now the #1 contenders for the tag team belts.

Winner via pin-fall: Rey Misterio and Billy Kidman

Kurt Angle is in the trainers room receiving treatment for the beating he took earlier. Brock Lesnar stops by to rib Angle. When questioned about his whereabouts earlier in the show, Lesnar says he just showed up. He assures Angle that at Vengance they will take out Big Show. Angle lets Lesnar know that it\'s still every man for himself.

Zach Gowan\'s match from last week is shown in it\'s entirety, and just like the WWE, I won\'t provide any new content in this space. Instead I will lift the entire recap from Jason Clevett\'s report last week. Here it is.

Stephanie McMahon & Zack Gowan vs. The Big Show

Vince and Sable are sitting at ringside as Zack, complete with his own entrance music and video joins Stephanie in the ring. Gowan goes right at him with punches and Show just tosses him around. He rips of Gowan\'s shirt, G is a scrawny little fella, and goes outside. Steph jumps on Shows back and is gently deposited on the floor. Why couldn\'t you have been that careful with Rey you oaf? Z goes under the ring, Show pulls off his leg, and Zack comes out the other side and hits a baseball slide and a pescado, which Show catches. Show continues to dominate, including pressing Steph over the top into the ring. Big Show shows his strength by lifting Steph in the air for quite awhile. Of course he comes Vince, who says chokeslam her. Gowan breaks it up with a dropkick, but Vince gets Show to chokeslam him. Steph slaps Vince, cue the run-ins as Angle comes in, Ankle lock, Vince breaks it up with a chairshot. Zack dropkicks a chair into Show\'s face, Angle Slam, F-5 and a one-legged moonsault by Gowan, and Zack gets his contract and the crowd goes insane.

Smackdown! G.M. Stephanie McMahon makes her way to the ring with Zach Gowan\'s contract in hand. Zach then makes his way to ring, where he crosses and the T\'s and dots all the I\'s and makes himself an official Smackdown! superstar. Of course, Vince has to spoil the party. With Sable at his side he tells Zach that there will be a special handicapped match tonight. No, not involving him, but Brock Lesnar, who will be facing Big Show, Charlie Haas, and Shelton Benjiman. Vince then informs the one-legged wonder (I mean that in a good way, and I hope it catches on) that his first official match will be at Vengeance. He will face Vince McMahon, himself. The out of nowhere, Sable slaps Steph upside the head with the contract clipboard.

Backstage, Vince steals a kiss from Sable in the G.M.\'s office. The, screaming like a banshee, Steph tackles Sable to the floor and the two go at it. Not quite the Miller Lite girls, but it\'ll do. After the two are broken up Vince books another match for the PPV, Stephanie vs. Sable. Is that the sound of buy rates going up? What? It\'s just the change in my own pockets. Never mind then.

Match #2: Matt Hardy and Shannon Moore vs. Chris Benoit and Rhyno

This match surprised me. I was waiting for Rhyno to accidentally hit Benoit, but it never happened. Instead, Rhyno saves Benoit by goring Hardy out of the ring after Hardy hit the Twist of Fate on Benoit. Moore waits to long for the pin attempt and Benoit locks in the Crippler Cross Face, to which Moore promptly taps out.

Winner via submission: . Chris Benoit and Rhyno

Angle tells Lesnar that he has his back during the handicapped match, tonight. We wouldn\'t want the champ to get hurt, would we? And neither would Angle.

Match #3: U.S. Title tournament match - Ultimo Dragon vs. Eddie Guerrero

Eddie grabs the stick before the match and sends a get well message to Tajiri. Guerrero blames last week\'s incident on his temper problem. He beseeches the crowd to understand, I mean Tajiri did touch his car. The crowed actually sympathizes with Guerrero. Ultimo Dragon starts the match off with a flurry of kicks. At one point Guerrero is almost thrown into his car. After a leg scissors to Guerrero, Ultimo tries a standing moonsault. Guerrero rolls through and gets the pin with an inside cradle and a little help from holding the tights

Winner via pinfall: Eddie Guerrero

Backstage Mr. Ass and Torrie Wilson are making out. Two words: NOT FAIR!

Match #4: Mixed Tag n Torrie Wilson and Billy Gunn vs. Nidia and Jamie Noble

Noble and Nidia really haven\'t spent much since inheriting that cash. I wonder if he\'s saving it for something (note the forshadowing, it\'s a writing technique I picked up in school). This match is pretty short with the ladies dominating most of the action. Torrie lays out Nidia with a mean DDT to pick up the win. After the match, Noble grabs the stick, telling Torrie that he knows she wants him. He offers the Playboy covergirl $10,000 to spend the night. Torrie refuses and before Noble can get physical, Gunn makes the save. I was expecting a Fame-asser, but instead Torrie knocks out Noble with a DDT.

Winner via pin-fall: Torrie Wilson and Billy Gunn

Kurt Angle is walking with Brock Lesnar, backstage. One of the production assistants tells Kurt the Mr. McMahon wants to see him in his office, now. Angle reluctantly agrees to go.

Match #5: n Brock Lesnar vs. Big Show, Charlie Haas, and Shelton Benjiman

This match is now falls count anywhere, to stack the deck against Lesnar even more. The fight spills outside the ring early. Lesnar is double teamed by iThe greatest tad team ever.i Big Show gets in on the action with a steel chair, laying out the champ. Show can\'t get the pin, though. All three men dominate Lesnar, but the champ makes a comeback, countering a chokeslam, and then throwing Show out of the ring with a belly-to-belly suplex. Lesnar manages to hit the F-5 on Haas, but is pulled out of the ring by Benjiman before he can make the pin. Lesnar then hits an overhead suplex on Benji, and proceeds to throw him into the ring post. The champs sets up the steps in front of the announce table. Something bad is gonna happen! A big boot from Big Show takes down Lesnar, as he tried to carry Benjiman up the steps. Lesnar fights back, and tries to set up Big Show for an F-5. Instead, Lesnar is chokeslamed off the steps, and through the announce table. Big Show pins the champ for the victory.

Winner via pinfall: Big Show

Not much happened after the bell. Big Show roared and headed back up the ramp, as the champ lay motionless in the wreckage of the annouce table.
