TNA: 'Extreme' debuts rock show
DONNIE ABREU - SLAM! Wrestling
RAVEN VS. D'LO BROWN
D'Lo is sporting a new t-shirt this week.. "You're Looking at the Real Deal." If he's my deal - I fold.
Raven dominates from the start, and mocks Brown's shakey-neck gimmick. D'Lo knocked Raven to the floor several times, only to be helped up by his Apostles. As Julio is helping his mentor back into the ring, Brown launches himself to the outside (clearing the top rope) taking out both men. Very impressive!
With Raven down, Brown went up top and came down with a less than spectacular frog splash. Julio entered the ring with a superkick, allowing Raven to roll his man. The referee, who was busy chatting with Alexis, only counted 2. After a ref bump, the Nest dusted off an old chestnut by tossing white powder into Brown's eyes. Blinded by talc, the former Euro-Continental champion attacks Julio and Laree only to get caught in a DDT by his actual opponent. I think D'Lo's TNA-debut steam has finally run out.
Nice video package is shown promoting Raven's World title match in 14 days. This is easily the most hyped match and most thought out feud TNA has had since it's inception. I can't wait for the payoff.
Don West and Mike Tenay introduce themselves and the rest of the program.
TNA reporter Goldylocks is in the Sports Entertainment Xtreme locker room. Glen Gilberti is firing up the troops and talking about each man's opponent for the evening.
FALLS COUNTANYWHERE STREET FIGHT:
"GIFTED" GLEN GILBERTI VS. "PHENOMINAL" A.J. STYLES
Both men come to the ring sporting jeans, t-shirts and boots. The match starts off in typical brawling fashion. Stomps, punches and tosses into the ring post on the outside. C'mon A.J. Stylize him!
As an aside - I really wish TNA wouldn't feature these matches where they battle into the crowds. It only serves to illustrate how small the arena actually is.
They battle on the outside for 10 minutes or so before A.J. finally gets busted open and is seen wearing a bright crimson mask. Members of S.E.X. work on Styles until D'Lo Brown decides to interject and fights them all off. The match is back down to a 1-on-1 encounter and is finally back in the ring, where Styles nailed a pump-handle backbreaker and a snap-side suplex.
Styles decides to go hardcore smacking Gilberti with several chairshots before getting caught with a kick to the midsection and a Stonecold Stunner. The stunner forced Styles' chin into the chair he was holding. Painful looking spot. Gilberti covers and wins.
WINNER: GLEN GILBERTI
Goldy is back outside with Dusty Rhodes. Dusty reminding Jarrett (who hasn't arrived yet) that there is nothing more important than being NWA champion. Eric Watts walks by and mocks Rhodes a little. Dusty puts himself over saying he is "The best there is, the best there was and the best there ever will be". Oh, Dusty - Bret Hart's lawyer is on line two.
When he turns his back, Watts tosses his duffel bag at Rhodes' beefy back. While it appeared soft and cushy, the Dust went down like a ton of bricks. Weak segment. Thankfully it was short.
X-DIVISION TITLE: KID KASH VS. MIKE SANDERS
The champion was led to the ring by Trinity. Kash asks for the mic before his opponent is introduced. He says he is embarrassed and ashamed of the way he acted towards his valet last week. He says she really was part of the reason he became champion and she deserves his support if she decides to wrestle other men. He says he will always have her back. He asks her to accept his apology and continue their team. He drops the mic and plants a kiss on her. Trinity smiles and they go into their Impact Players style pose. I smell a swerve.
Sanders is introduced.
Kash starts in control but is quickly overpowered by the Above Average One. Sanders slows the pace and uses a variety of suplexes and various ground attacks. A nice fish out of water spot ended with fierce looking double clotheslines. That allowed Trinity to climb the ropes and look for a moonsault - but Sanders ran to the corner and pushed her to the outside.
Kash added a new move to his arsenal this week: a springboard-corkscrew-moonsault. Nice.
Trinity jumps into the ring and hits a spin kick and moonsault. Kash recovers, runs to the corner and comes flying out with the same moonsault Trinity just hit, but Sanders reversed this one into a short powerbomb. Only a two count.
The finish came with Sanders laying against the the ropes when Kash hit his summersault Van-Terminator. Amazing! 1-2-3.
WINNER AND STILL CHAMPION: KID KASH
Kash takes his title and heads for the ramp. The Harris' enter the ring and grab Trinity. They threaten to squash her if Kash doesn't return. The X champ smiles pointing to his title and leaves. Trinity takes an H-Bomb.
Goldy is backstage with the New Church. Father James Mitchell calls out Perry Saturn, saying that he has caused him problems over the last couple weeks. Above all, he cost him a great drinking partner in Sandman. Mitchell then says he has gone into Saturn's past to produce "the flesh-eating dragon" that will slay him tonight.
Perry asks for Mitchell to send his mystery opponent outOe. YES YES YES n It's Mike Awesome!
PERRY SATURN VS. MIKE AWESOME
Awsome, who has been spending time in New Japan since his WWE release, is sporting long hair once again (no mullet) and is looking considerably thicker around the middle.
On the outside, Awesome connected with one of his old ECW spots - leaping over the safety rail and hitting his man with a spear. Awesome then set up a table on the outside that will come into play later on.
Saturn muscles the former ECW champ up with several brutal looking Germans.
Awesome landed his top rope splash and the ref's hand landed three times. Saturn rolled the shoulder at three and the ref screamed "Twoooo!". Ooops.
Without warning or reason, Sandman and New Jack crashed the party attacking Awesome only to be jumped by the New Church.
The match is thrown out.
WINNER: DOUBLE DQ
I am really enjoying Saturn's newly developed shoot-fighting style. He appears to be working stiffer and attempting to make his matches look as real as possible.
It was great to see Awesome again, but he did look heavier and considerably slower. Here's hoping he can return to his 1999 form.
We then see a pre taped interview by Mike Tenay with America's Most Wanted.
Chris Harris is saying that there isn't an issue with the team, and the fact that he is friends with members of S.E.X. outside the ring is no big deal. Harris says his recent singles matches meant nothing as far as the future of their tag team is concerned. Apparently Harris still wants to re-capture the NWA tag titles with his partner James Storm. He goes on to say that when "The Cowboy" faces David Young this week, he will have his back.
Goldylocks (boy she gets around), is now backstage with David Young, Sonny Siaki and Desire. She asks Young why he attacked Athena last week. Sonny tells "Goofylocks" to mind her own business. He then re-introduces himself, "The Ace in the Hole". This gimmick of his has really grown on me. Goldy tells us that Siaki was scheduled to face Storm tonight. Siaki replies with a disgusted look saying, "Ace in the Hole face a nobody? Do you know Ace in the Hole's schedule? I'm a corporation. Ace in the Hole is very busy". He was hysterical.
Young interrupted and told Storm how he was going to kick his butt, etc etc...only to be interrupted by the Ace in the Hole. He told Young that everyone in S.E.X. is hip, but Young's promos suck! "This is not the Beverly Hillbillies. From here on out I'll do all the talking."
DAVID YOUNG VS. iCOWBOYi JAMES STORM
Melba Toast versus Vanilla Frosting. How exciting. Both men are in desperate need of emergency charisma transplants.
Young, starts the match off showcasing his power and the odd dropkick. Storm is looking very sluggish, but did redeem himself with a nice top rope moonsault.
After 4 or 5 minutes, Storm botched his finisher, the 8-Second Ride but went for the pinfall anyway. The ref was about to count three but was pulled out of the ring by The Ace In Hole. Storm went for another 8 Second Ride, but was distracted by Desire. Young hit his version of the Anderson Spinebuster and picked up the W. America's Most Wanted is still winless in singles competition.
WINNER: DAVID YOUNG
Goldylocks is backstage and believe it or not - New Jack and Sandman are playing Chess. This is priceless!
She wants to know if they can co-exist in their tag match this week after last week's issues. Sandman says they are brothers of extreme blood, and hints that the boys from ECW will always stick together. New Jack reminds everyone that he is extreme and he is here for blood. He doesn't want a belt, because if he wins won he'll head straight to the local pawn shop! Nice.
Sandman tells New Jack he's in Checkmate. They scream at each other, Sandman cracks a beer on his forehead - good times were had by all.
BRIAN LEE AND SLASH VS. SANDMAN AND NEW JACK
The Brothers of Extreme enter separately, allowing the New Church to double team New Jack. Sandman hits the ring, and starts the match with a top rope huricanrana. Haven't seen him attempt that in years! Nicely done too.
The match quickly slowed to a stomp fest.
New Jack is set up on the table outside the ring (the same one Mike Awesome opened up earlier) as Slash attempts to leap from the top. Sandman interrupted with a cane shot only to be attacked by Lee and Father Mitchell. Mitchell put his evil spike into Sandman's head. That brought out Saturn, which brought out Awesome.
Awesome picked Sandman up in a Razor's Edge position and tossed him to the floor, through the table! Ouch. Slash rolls New Jack into the ring and gets the win.
WINNER: THE NEW CHURCH
The battle continues until the lights go out. When they come back up, JUSTIN CREDIBLE is in the ring!! Singapore cane in hand, Credible destroys the New Church and electrifies the crowd! The four ECW alumni celebrate and drink beers together. The crowd went bananas!
NWA TNA TAG TEAM TITLE MATCH: ELIX SKIPPER AND CHRISTOPHER DANIELS
VS. AMAZING RED and JERRY LYNN
"The X-Division Dream Team" is cheered heavily by the crowd as Triple X is once again in action without Low-Ki. I'm guessing he's still in Japan.
The action in this match is lightning fast and very difficult to do justice via a written account. Unbelievable high spots by the Amazing Red early on, and great ring work by "The Fallen Angel" Christopher Daniels.
Skipper entered the match with a slingshot corkscrew plancha onto a prone Jerry Lynn. On the outside of the ring, Lynn took out both members of Triple X with a springboard summersault, and then held the champions, allowing Red to come from the ring and leap over the ropes into a fantastic twisting dive. Welcome to Highspot City!
Incredible series saw Red take Skipper down only to have him Matrix out and then get caught with an unbelievable Infra Red! (Pendulum Style powerbomb, where Red starts on his opponents back).
Daniels locks Red into the Koji Klutch! This match is awesome. Lynn makes the save and allows Red to launch a series of cartwheel spin kicks before finally making the hot tag.
Lynn takes on both men while Red recovers. Jerry then put Daniels up in an Electric Chair position when Red came off a springboard onto Daniels and took him down with a Hurricanrana. WOW!
Red went up top again when he was attacked by that mystery luchador.
That storyline has become a little cloudy - especially since we haven't seen Konnan in two straight weeks. Guess we'll have to wait and see where TNA takes us with that one. After he did his damage the Spider wearing masked man ran to the dressing room.
With Red injured outside the ring, Lynn took a beating at the hands of both men. He took the Angel's Wings and several incredible double team maneuvers. Lynn then reversed a move and came up with a small package / victory roll / perfect bridge for the win! It was the single best roll-up I've ever seen.
WINNERS AND NEW CHAMPIONS: RED AND LYNN
As the new champs celebrate they are attacked by Triple X.
Jeff Jarrett makes the save but only to clear the ring so he can call out Raven. Raven doesn't show but he is attacked by Alexis and Julio (who he challenged earlier in the show). Jarrett is wiping out both Apostles with chairshots while the ring crew sets the ring up for a Clockwork Orange House Of Fun match - as Double J had requested earlier.
Raven's Clockwork Orange House Of Fun match
JEFF JARRETT VS JULIO DINERO AND ALEXIS LAREE (Non-Title Match)
Now in the ring, Dinero and Laree attack Jarrett with all of the weapons provided by the Clockwork Orange set up. There are nunchucks, steel gates, chairs, canes, etc. They dominated the World Champion for several minutes.
After a powerbomb to Laree on top of Dinero and a couple trash-can shots, Jarrett was back in control. He continued to beat on Raven's crew while waiting for the leader to make his appearance.
Jarrett set both family members up on a table and went up to the top rope. Raven picked his spot and clobbered the champ with a trash can lid. He then took Jarrett up and over with a superplex through the table and through Dinero and Laree! I love it!
The Raven Effect follows as Julio Dinero rolls on top for the win.
WINNERS: JULIO DINERO AND ALEXIS LAREE
A solid show with not one, but two big surprises in Awesome and Credible. Match of the night, and maybe of match of 2003 had to have been the tag title bout. Absolutely a must see. If you missed this week's show, order the encore.
