TORONTO - There was his trip to the Ancient Olympia to participate in the Sochi 2014 torch relay.

Then there was his gleeful appearance in the Team Russia music video, Shaybu, Shaybu (translation, puck) to help promote the upcoming Winter Olympics.

And most important of all, we would submit, the sensational start to the NHL season for Alex Ovechkin indicates just how much an Olympics on Russian soil fits in the heart and mind of the Washington Capitals superstar.

After Saturday’s Air Canada Centre date with the Maple Leafs, Ovechkin has 43 goals in 45 regular-season games, a torrid pace and one that arguably speaks to the added motivation of being in peak form come February.

There may not be an elite athlete who relishes the biggest stages in his sport more than Ovechkin and it’s clear that the Moscow native is in full prep mode for the Sochi Games.
