SAINT JOHN, N.B. - He was a little confused about the actual game, but world figure skating champion Patrick Chan took inspiration from a performance and a quote by Detroit Tigers pitcher Justin Verlander in this year’s AL playoffs.

Chan, who is in Saint John for the Skate Canada International competition, said he recalls a quote by Verlander after the Tigers pitcher “won the game against the Boston Red Sox” in this year’s post-season. The trouble is, Verlander didn’t beat the Boston Red Sox, though he pitched a masterful game in a 1-0 Game 3 loss against the Sox in the AL Championship Series. In the AL Division Series, Verlander shut out the Oakland A’s in Game 5 to get the win. In any event, Chan said he was inspired when, after Verlander beat someone in the playoffs, the pitcher was asked when he knew he was going to win, and Verlander replied: “the minute I stepped on the mound.” Chan said that’s the attitude he wants to adopt this season leading up to the Sochi Olympics.
