Daniel Nestor of Toronto and Serbian partner Nenad Zimonjic were victorious Wednesday as Wimbledon doubles competition got underway.

The two won a straight sets victory against Italian duo Paolo Lorenzi and Andreas Seppi, 7-5 (5), 6-3, 6-4, at the All England Club in London.

Nestor and Zimonjic will face German pair Dustin Brown and Jan-Lennard Struff in the second round.

Canadians on the women’s doubles side did not fare as well.

Eugenie Bouchard of Westmount, Que., and British partner Heather Watson put up a late fight, but were eventually downed by the Australian team of Ashleigh Barty and Casey Dellaqua, 6-4, 7-6 (3).

Gabriela Dabrowski of Ottawa and Polish mate Alicja Rosolska fell 7-5, 6-4, 6-2 to Lucie Hradecka of the Czech Republic and Michaella Krajicek of the Netherlands.

Sharon Fichman of Toronto and Croatian partner Donna Vekic lost to Kimiko Date-Krumm of Japan and Barbora Zahlavova Strycova of the Czech Republic 6-1, 6-2.

Bouchard returns to singles action Thursday, taking on Silvia Soler-Espinosa of Spain. Milos Raonic of Thornhill, Ont., will also hit the court against Jack Sock of the U.S. while Frank Dancevic of Niagara Falls, Ont., faces Mikhail Kukushkin of Kazakhstan. Sock will be pulling double duty as he and Vasek Pospisil of Vernon, B.C., start their doubles run against Robin Haase and Jesse Huta Galung of the Netherlands.
