Canadians to vie for Wimbledon crowns
By QMI Agency
Canada will have two shots at a Wimbledon championship on the weekend -- at the junior level. Eugenie Bouchard and Filip Peliwo won their semifinal matches Friday to advance to the girls' and boys' championship respectively. Bouchard won her semifinal 7-6(3), 6-4 against Estonian Anett Kontaveit. The 18-year-old from Westmount, Que., became the first Canadian girl to reach a major singles final since Sonya Jeyaseelan in 1994 at Roland-Garros. Bouchard, the fifth seed, will play third-seeded Elina Svitolina of Ukraine in the final. Svitolina defeated another Canadian, Abanda Francis, 15, in the other semifinal. Peliwo, 18, of Vancouver, defeated American Mitchell Krueger in three sets 5-7, 7-6(3), 6-3. Peliwo, the fourth seed, will meet No. 1 seed Luke Saville of Australia in the final. |
