Eugenie Bouchard’s run at the Family Circle Cup finally ended in the semifinals Saturday.
The 20-year-old from Westmount, Que., cruised by German opponent Andrea Petkovic in the first set, but ended up falling, 1-6, 6-3, 7-5, in Charleston, S.C.
Bouchard was two games away from victory in the final set, but Petkovic battled back and handed the Canadian her third loss in as many head-to-head meetings between the two competitors.
Bouchard held a 4-2 lead in the third set but couldn’t finish off Petkovic, who went on to break Bouchard twice to advance to the tournament final.
“I’m just very happy. I’m just very emotional right now,” Petkovic said during her post-match on-court interview. “The match was really tough. Genie played so well today. She was so aggressive, and I have to admit I was a little lucky in the second set when I managed to turn the match around.
“It was just a few points here and there that made the difference.”
Petkovic next faces Slovakia’s Jana Cepelova.
