Canadian tennis star Eugenie Bouchard has advanced to the semifinals at the HP Open in Japan.

Bouchard, who lost only seven games in her first two matches, needed three sets Friday to defeat Czech opponent Barbora Zahlavova Strycova 2-6, 6-4, 6-1.

With the win, Bouchard, a native of Westmount, Que., is off to her third WTA semifinal of the season.

Ranked 35th on the WTA Tour, Bouchard, 19, will be looking to make her first career final when she faces Japan's Kurumi Nara, who is ranked No. 87.

POSPISIL, PARTNER LOSE

Canadian star Vasek Pospisil, along with Swedish partner Robert Lindstedt, were eliminated Friday at the Shanghai Masters in China.

Pospisil, a Vernon, B.C., native, and Lindstedt, lost 6-3, 3-6, 10-6 in a quarterfinal match versus the No. 12-ranked pairing of Britain’s Jamie Murray and Australia’s John Peers. The match took 73 minutes and included 10 aces from Murray and Peers.

Next up for Murray and Peers is a semifinal date Saturday with the No. 7 men’s doubles team in the world, which consists of Fernando Verdasco and David Marrero, both of Spain.
