Canadian Eugenie Bouchard posted her first win over a top-50 player Wednesday at the Family Circle Cup.
Bouchard, a 19-year-old from Westmount, Que., who is ranked 114th in the world, knocked off British teen Laura Robson, the 16th seed and world No. 42, 6-4, 3-6, 6-1 to reach the third round of the WTA Premier tournament in Charleston, S.C. It was the second time in the last two years that Bouchard has beaten 19-year-old Robson and set her up for a career-best finish in a WTA tourney.
Next up for Bouchard is a meeting with third-seeded Samantha Stosur of Australia, ranked ninth in the world. Stosur beat Marina Erakovic of New Zealand to reach the third round.
Bouchard is the only Canadian entered in the Family Circle Cup. She got into the main draw through the pre-tourney qualifying.
