LUXEMBOURG, Luxembourg -- Victoria Azarenka of Belarus had few problems in defeating Romanian Monica Niculescu in Sunday's final at the Luxembourg Open.
The top-seeded Azarenka earned a 6-2, 6-2 victory in 75 minutes to claim her third title of the season and eighth of her career.
She did so by using a strong return game. Azarenka won 62 percent of points on return and broke Niculescu six times, while working through quick service games. She double-faulted four times, but got her first serve in play 80 percent of the time and won 68 percent of those points.
Azarenka, ranked third in the world, collected $37,000 for the victory and went through the tournament without dropping a set.
She also improved to 4-0 in her career against Niculescu and has lost only one set in those four matchups.
Niculescu was playing in her first WTA title match and could have qualified for next month's Tournament of Champions in Bali with a victory.
