STRASBOURG, France -- Andrea Petkovic of Germany captured the Strasbourg International crown when France's Marion Bartoli retired in the second set of Saturday's final.
Petkovic was ahead 6-4, 1-0 when Bartoli called it quits because of a thigh injury, giving the second seed her second career WTA title and first since Bad Gastein in 2009. It was her second final of 2011, having lost to Petra Kvitova in the title match at the Australian Open tuneup in Brisbane to start the year.
The 15th-ranked Petkovic reached her first career Grand Slam quarterfinal at the Aussie Open in January and next week is seeded 16th for the French Open. She will face Serbia's Bojana Jovanovski in the first round at Roland Garros.
Bartoli, this week's top seed, fell to 5-8 all-time in WTA finals, including two losses this year. She also lost to Caroline Wozniacki in the title match at Indian Wells in March.
The 11th-ranked Bartoli will start her French Open next week as the 11th seed, unless the injury forces her out, and will take on Anna Tatishvili in the first round.
Saturday marked the third meeting this year between Bartoli and Petkovic. The German has won twice, taking a semifinal decision in Brisbane before a loss in the third round at Indian Wells. Bartoli also beat Petkovic in the second round of the 2007 French Open.
Petkovic collected a first prize of $37,000.
