MADRID - World No. 1 Caroline Wozniacki, Francesca Schiavone and Maria Sharapova were first-round winners Sunday at the $4.5 million Madrid Open.

Wozniacki needed a little more than an hour to complete her 6-2, 6-3 victory against Japan's Ayumi Morita. The top-seeded Dane was the Madrid runner-up in 2009.

Schiavone, the third seed, was a 7-5, 7-6 (7-2) winner against China's Peng Shuai, while the eighth-seeded Sharapova rallied past Arantxa Rus, 2-6, 6-3, 6-2 in two hours on the red clay at the Magic Box.

Swedish qualifier Sofia Arvidsson ousted France's Aravane Rezai, the defending champion, 6-3, 3-6, 6-4. Rezai upset American Venus Williams in last year's finale.

German Julia Goerges, the titlist in Stuttgart a week ago, earned a 6-7 (3-7), 6-1, 6-4 decision against 14th-seeded Estonian Kaia Kanepi.

Additional first-round winners Sunday included 11th-seeded Marion Bartoli of France, Slovak Daniela Hantuchova, Spain's Arantxa Parra Santonja, and Russian Elena Vesnina.

The 2011 Madrid winner will pocket $920,000.
