Azarenka qualifies for WTA Championships

MOSCOW -- Second-seeded Victoria Azarenka qualified for next week's season-ending WTA Championships by posting a second-round victory Wednesday at the $1 million Kremlin Cup tennis event.

The world No. 10 Azarenka got past German Andrea Petkovic 6-4, 2-6, 6-1 to secure a spot in the prestigious eight-woman Championships field in Doha for a second straight year.

Other seeded winners here on Day 3 were No. 7 Russian favorite Alisa Kleybanova, who handled Italian Sara Errani 7-6 (7-0), 6-4 on the indoor hardcourts at Olympic Stadium, and No. 8 Spaniard Maria Jose Martinez Sanchez, who held off Ukrainian Alona Bondarenko 6-4, 1-6, 6-1. Kleybanova will meet the Belarusian Azarenka in Friday's quarterfinals.

One other Wednesday result saw Slovakian Dominika Cibulkova drive out Bulgarian Tsvetana Pironkova 6-4, 6-1. Cibulkova will face Martinez Sanchez in the round of eight.

On Thursday, top-seeded former world No. 1 Jelena Jankovic will play a second- round match against Russian Zarina Diyas. The Serbian Jankovic was the champion here two years ago.

This week's winner will collect $157,427.
