MOSCOW -- Third-seeded Chinese Li Na and fifth-seeded Italian Flavia Pennetta were a pair of first-round upset victims Tuesday at the $1 million Kremlin Cup tennis event.

Former top-10 Russian Anna Chakvetadze took out Li 6-4, 6-2, while another Russian, Elena Vesnina, doused Pennetta in 6-4, 2-6, 6-2 fashion on the indoor hardcourts at Olympic Stadium. Chakvetadze captured this event back in 2006.

A pair of Russian seeds advanced on Day 2, as No. 6 Maria Kirilenko clobbered Romanian Alexandra Dulgheru 6-2, 6-2 and No. 7 Alisa Kleybanova outlasted Czech Lucie Safarova 6-2, 6-7 (4-7), 7-6 (7-1) in 2 hours, 39 minutes.

In other action involving Russians, Bulgarian Tsvetana Pironkova held off qualifier Ksenia Pervak 6-1, 3-6, 6-2 and Vera Dushevina handled compatriot Ekaterina Makarova 7-5, 6-0.

Additional opening-round wins came for Italian Sara Errani, German Andrea Petkovic, Kazakhstanian qualifier Zarina Diyas and Ukrainian qualifier Mariya Koryttseva. Petkovic bested last year's Moscow runner-up Olga Govortsova 0-6, 7-5, 6-0. The Belarusian Govortsova lost to Italian Francesca Schiavone in last year's Kremlin Cup finale.

Top-seeded former world No. 1 Jelena Jankovic will meet Diyas here on Thursday, while second-seeded Victoria Azarenka, of Belarus, will open her week with a second-round affair against Petkovic on Wednesday.

This week's winner will collect $157,427.
