OSAKA, Japan -- Japan's Kimiko Date Krumm upended top-seeded Samantha Stosur of Australia on Friday to reach the semifinals at the $220,000 HP Open.

The sixth-seeded Date Krumm, who turned 40 last month, became the first 40- something in WTA Tour history to defeat a top-10 player, as the French Open runner-up Stosur is currently ranked eighth in the world.

Date Krumm posted a 5-7, 6-3, 7-6 (7-4) win over the defending Osaka champion Stosur and will next face third-seeded Shahar Peer of Israel, a thorough 6-2, 6-0 winner over seventh-seeded Iveta Benesova of the Czech Republic, in Saturday's semifinals. Stosur beat Francesca Schiavone in last year's final here. Schiavone upset Stosur in this year's French Open title tilt.

The other semi will pit second-seeded Marion Bartoli of France against Thailand's Tamarine Tanasugarn. Bartoli cruised to a 6-1, 6-2 win over American Jill Craybas, while Tanasugarn outlasted Chang Kai-Chen of Taiwan, 6-3, 2-6, 6-4.

The winner of this tournament will collect $37,000.
