Ninth-seeded Italian Sara Errani avoided an upset by leveling Kazakhstanian qualifier Sesil Karatantcheva 6-2, 6-2.

A popular Day-2 win came when wild card and Austrian favourite Sybille Bammer blitzed former top-10 Russian Anna Chakvetadze 7-5, 6-0.

Meanwhile, German Julia Goerges held off Slovenian qualifier Polona Hercog 6-4, 4-6, 6-4 and Swiss veteran Patty Schnyder shut down Argentine Gisela Dulko 6-2, 6-3.

Additional opening-round wins came for Czechs Barbora Zahlavova Strycova and qualifier Renata Voracova and Spaniard Carla Suarez Navarro.

Belgian Yanina Wickmayer, who is not defending her title here this week, defeated Czech Petra Kvitova, this week's fifth seed, in last year's Linz finale.

The 2010 Linz titlist will claim $37,000.
