Linz, Austria - Seeds Andrea Petkovic and Klara Zakopalova were among Monday's opening-round winners at the $220,000 Generali Ladies Linz tennis event.
The sixth-seeded Petkovic handled fellow German Angelique Kerber 6-3, 6-4, while the eighth-seeded Zakopalova, of the Czech Republic, downed Russian Elena Vesnina 7-5, 7-5 on the indoor hardcourts at Intersport Arena. Petkovic had been 0-6 lifetime against her compatriot Kerber.
In other Day-1 action, Brit Anne Keothavong overcame Aussie Jarmila Groth 4-6, 6-1, 7-6 (7-4) and Swede Sofia Arvidsson came from behind to drive out wild card and Austrian crowd favorite Yvonne Meusburger 5-7, 6-3, 6-3.
Belgian Yanina Wickmayer, who is not defending her title here this week, defeated Czech Petra Kvitova in last year's Linz finale.
Top-seeded Serena Williams pulled out of this tournament on Sunday, as she continues to recover from a foot injury suffered back in July.
The 2010 Linz titlist will claim $37,000.
