SEOUL -- Top-seeded Russian Nadia Petrova and former world No. 1 Russian Dinara Safina posted first-round wins Wednesday, while former top-ranked star Ana Ivanovic lost in her opening match at the Korea Open.

Petrova was a 6-3, 6-3 winner over Australian Jarmila Groth, who captured her first WTA Tour singles title on Sunday as the top seed in Guangzhou, while the three-time major runner-up and wild card Safina got past Romanian qualifier Simona Halep 6-4, 6-4.

In the only upset of the first round, the seventh-seeded and former French Open champion Ivanovic was downed by Russia's Vera Dushevina 2-6, 6-4, 6-2 in a little over two hours.

The rest of the seeded matches fell in line, with No. 2 seed Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova topping Aussie and former fellow Russian Anastasia Rodionova 7-6 (8-6), 6-1; third-seeded Russian Maria Kirilenko dropping Poland's Urszula Radwanska 6-3, 6-1; No. 4 seed Maria Jose Martinez Sanchez of Spain beating Taipei qualifier Su-Wei Hsieh 7-6 (7-3), 6-4; Spaniard Anabel Medina Garrigues falling at the hands of No. 6 seed Yaroslava Shvedova of Kazakhstan 6-4, 7-5; and No. 8 seed Agnes Szavay of Hungary besting Slovenian Polona Hercog 6-1, 6-2.

Japan's Kimiko Date Krumm, who beat Medina Garrigues in the final here last year, defeated qualifier countrymate Junri Namigata 6-2, 7-5.

In other action on Wednesday, Czech Klara Zakopalova tripped up German Julia Goerges 7-5, 2-6, 7-5, American Vania King won a 6-4, 7-5 battle against Italian Alberta Brianti, and Belgian Kirsten Flipkens defeated Serbian qualifier Bojana Jovanovski 2-6, 6-3, 6-4. King will face the No. 1 seed Petrova on Thursday.

Due to some all-day rain here on Tuesday, only four first-round matches were completed prior to Wednesday. Those moving on earlier in the week were Russians Alisa Kleybanova, Ekaterina Makarova and Ksenia Pervak and Brit Elena Baltacha.
