Bartoli advances in Quebec

QUEBEC CITY -- Top-seeded Marion Bartoli, last year's runner-up Lucie Safarova and fifth-seeded American Melanie Oudin were among Tuesday's opening-round winners at the $220,000 Bell Challenge women's tennis tournament.

Bartoli, a former Wimbledon runner-up, blew past French qualifier Stephanie Foretz Gacon, 6-1, 6-1.

The third-seeded Safarova topped American Varvara Lepchenko 7-5, 6-3. The Czech Safarova was last year's Quebec City runner-up to Hungarian Melinda Czink.

Oudin got past fellow American Alison Riske 6-2, 7-6 (7-3) on the indoor hardcourt at PEPS Laval University Campus.

There were some upsets involving seeded players. American Jill Craybas took out No. 2 Frenchwoman Aravane Rezai, 6-3, 3-6, 7-6 (7-3). Canadian Valerie Tetreault thrilled the home crowd by dispatching fourth-seeded Czech Barbora Zahlavova Strycova, 6-3, 3-6, 6-2. Canadian Stephanie Dubois defeated seventh seed Olga Govortsova of Belarus, 6-4, 2-6, 7-5.

Additional Tuesday wins came for Americans Alexa Glatch and Bethanie Mattek- Sands. Glatch grounded big-serving German Sabine Lisicki 6-4, 6-2 and Mattek- Sands handled qualifier compatriot Irina Falconi 6-4, 7-5. Mattek-Sands was the runner-up at this event two years ago.

Also winning here on Day 2 were Croat Mirjana Lucic and Austrian qualifier Tamira Paszek.
