CARLSBAD, Calif. -- Third-seeded Vera Zvonareva and fourth-seeded Agnieszka Radwanska were among Tuesday's first-round winners at the $700,000 Mercury Insurance Open.

Zvonareva, who is participating in her first tournament since finishing runner-up to Serena Williams at Wimbledon, got by Dominika Cibulkova 6-0, 3-6, 6-4 in almost 2 1/2 hours.

Zvonareva was the highest seeded player to participate in the first round, as top seeds Jelena Jankovic and Samantha Stosur received a bye into the second round.

Radwanska was a 7-5, 6-3 winner over qualifier Chanelle Scheepers of South Africa at La Costa Resort and Spa. Other seeded winners were fifth-seeded Flavia Pennetta and seventh-seeded Shahar Peer. Pennetta topped Kateryna Bondarenko 6-2, 7-5, while Peer beat former world No. 1 Ana Ivanovic 7-6 (7-3), 6-3.

The two seeded players to lose on Tuesday were sixth-seeded Marion Batoli, who lost to Daniela Hantuchova 3-6, 7-6 (7-3), 6-4 and eighth-seeded Yanina Wickmayer, who was beaten by former French Open champ Svetlana Kuznetsova 6-3, 2-6, 6-1.

American qualifier Coco Vandeweghe was leading wild card Gisela Dulko 6-0, 3-0 when her Argentine counterpart retired, and additional Day-2 wins came for Chinese Zheng Jie, Maria Kirilenko and Yaroslava Shvedova. Zheng doused American qualifier Shenay Perry 6-3, 6-2, Kirlenko defeated Kurumi Nara 6-4, 6-7 (4-7), 6-3 and Shvedova shut down former top-10 Russian Nadia Petrova 5-7, 6-4, 6-1.

The final match featured American Melanie Oudin, who topped Jamie Hampton 6-3, 6-4.

This San Diego event was last held in 2007, and this week's big winner will take home $107,000.
