Traffic-stopping players
By BILL LANKHOF, SUN MEDIA

The Rogers Cup women's tennis tournament is a real traffic stopper.

Tournament organizers, looking for a way to get noticed, have decided to play in traffic.

So, if you're driving on Yonge St. today wondering why life, and your car, are going nowhere, it could be because Ana Ivanovic and Caroline Wozniaki are looking for their tennis ball.

The two, reminiscent of a 1995 commercial Pete Sampras and Andre Agassi did for Nike that sees them jump off a New York bus and stop traffic to play, are part of a promotion stunt that will close down Toronto's main thoroughfare today at noon.

"We had to get through a lot of red tape," a tournament organizer yesterday said.

"We've got 25 minutes to get the motorcade in place, set up the court and net on Yonge St. (at Dundas) and play for about 10 minutes, then get everything off the street again."

Organizers are filming the event from street level as well as from a helicopter.

They're thinking YouTube hit.

And, never mind what the you're thinking -- this is a family newspaper.

Do you think it's a good idea for the U.S. Open to hold the men's final on a Monday?
