India's Sania Mirza is in town to play tennis in the 2009 Odlum Brown VanOpen tournament.

"Tennis is probably the second best sport in India, I don't think we can ever match it to cricket," Mirza said yesterday. "You can pick up a bat and ball and 21 players can play. In tennis you need two players and two racquets, it's obviously more user friendly."

The Mumbai-born, 22-year-old is 85th in world women's tennis rankings and is the top female at West Vancouver's Hollyburn Country Club.

Mirza is fresh from winning the Fifth Third Bank championship in Lexington, Ky. on July 26. She began 2009 by winning mixed doubles at the Australian Open. The 2006 Doha Asian Games mixed doubles gold medalist got her first taste of grand slam stardom when she shared the 2003 Wimbledon girls' doubles title.

The tournament runs through Sunday.
