PARIS (Ticker) -- Second seed Maria Sharapova of Russia pulled out of the Open Gaz de France tennis tournament Wednesday due to an upper respiratory illness.

After receiving a bye in the first round, Sharapova was scheduled to face France's Tatiana Golovin in the second round Thursday.

"I'm very disappointed I won't be playing in Paris this year," said Sharapova, the reigning Wimbledon champion. "I'm not in my best condition and will not be able to perform at my best."

Sharapova defeated world No. 1 Lindsay Davenport of the United States, 6-1, 3-6, 7-6 (7-5), on Sunday in the final of the Toray Pan Pacific Open for her eighth career title. Last month, she reached the semifinals of the Australian Open.

Sharapova's spot in the main draw was filled by lucky loser Sandra Mamic of Croatia.
