Canada’s Milos Raonic powered past Italy’s Thomas Fabbiano and into the second round at the U.S. Open in New York on Tuesday.

The 22-year-old, Thornhill, Ont., native overpowered Fabbiano with 28 aces and 52 winners to Fabbiano's 13 to win in straight sets 6-3, 7-6(8-6), 6-3.

The 10th-seeded Raonic next faces Spain’s Pablo Andujar, who eased past Thiemo de Bakker of the Netherlands in straight sets in his tournament opener.

Raonic is looking to better his U.S. Open finish from a year ago, when he worked his way into the fourth round of the tournament before falling to Britain’s Andy Murray in straight sets.
