Canadian Milos Raonic got past Belgium’s Xavier Malisse to advance to the second round of the French Open in Paris on Sunday.

Raonic used his big serve to collect 16 aces on the way to securing a 6-2, 6-1, 4-6, 6-4 win over his unseeded counterpart.

A 14th seed at the event, Raonic, of Thornhill, Ont., moved on to face world No. 55 Michael Llodra of France in the next round.

In two previous French Open entries, the 22-year-old Canadian, who improved his French Open record to 3-2 with Sunday’s win, hasn’t made it past the third round at the Grand Slam event.

Eugenie Bouchard, of Westmount, Que., Ottawa’s Jesse Levineand and Vancouver’s Vasek Pospisil will begin their French Open campaigns on Tuesday.
