Canada sweeps Bahamas in Fed Cup
By QMI Agency

Canada did what it could to move on to the next phase of the Fed Cup but it wasn't enough.

Canada posted a 3-0 win over the Bahamas in their Americas Zone Group I tie at Curitiba, Brazil, Friday but still failed to advance to the World Group II playoffs. Argentina's win over Peru left Canada in second place in its group, which wasn't enough for a spot in the world group.

In singles play, Marie-Eve Pelletier of Repentigny, Que., downed Gabrielle Moxey 6-1, 6-0 and Stephanie Dubois of Laval, Que., beat Simone Pratt 6-1, 6-1. Sharon Fichman of Toronto and Pelletier closed it out with a 6-1, 6-0 win over Moxey and Nikkita Fountain.

Canada was missing star Aleksandra Wozniak of Blainville, Que., for the tie with the Bahamas. Wozniak hurt her right foot against Argentina Thursday and returned to Montreal for further tests.

The Canadian team will play Brazil or Colombia for third place in the zonal event on Saturday.
