Canada was swept by Argentina at the Fed Cup tournament Thursday in Curitiba, Brazil.
The Canadians lost 3-0 to Argentina in the Americas Zone Group I event, all but eliminating them from further Fed Cup play this year. Canada needs to beat the Bahamas Friday and have Peru upset Argentina to have any chance of staying alive.
Brazil's 19-year-old Paula Ormaechea, ranked a career-best 139th in the world, opened the tie with a 7-5, 6-4 win over Aleksandra Wozniak of Blainville, Que. Stephanie Dubois of Laval, Que., then lost 6-2, 6-2 to Florencia Molinero, ranked 184th in the world, to give Brazil the win.
Sharon Fichman of Toronto and Marie-Eve Pelletier of Repentigny, Que., lost 6-0, 6-3 to Mailen Auroux and Maria Irogoyen in doubles to complete the sweep
