Andrea Petkovic and Julia Goerges won singles matches Saturday to give Germany a commanding 2-0 lead in its Fed Cup playoff tie against the United States.

The winner in the best-of-five matchup will head back into the World Group in 2012.

Petkovic, ranked 19th in the world, got the tie started with a 6-3, 6-4 victory against 18-year-old New Jersey native Christina McHale. Goerges followed with a 6-2, 7-6 (7-5) victory against 19-year-old Melanie Oudin of Georgia.

The Americans are playing without any of their injured top players -- Serena Williams, Venus Williams and Bethanie Mattek-Sands.

They face a tall task Sunday if they are to return to the World Group. Reverse singles currently pit Oudin against Petkovic and McHale versus Goerges, while the doubles call for an American tandem of Liezel Huber and Vania King to take on a German duo of Anna-Lena Groenefeld and Sabine Lisicki.

The 17-time champion United States lost to Italy in the 2009 and 2010 Fed Cup finals before losing to Belgium in the quarterfinals this year. Germany, meanwhile, beat Slovenia in a World Group II first round tie earlier this year.
