Czech Petra Kvitova and Belgian Yanina Wickmayer won singles matches Saturday to put the sides even in their Fed Cup semifinal.
Kvitova, ranked 18th in the world, opened the tie with a 6-2, 7-6 (7-4) victory against Kirsten Flipkens. However, Wickmayer recorded a 6-4, 6-4 win against Barbora Zahlavova Strycova to prevent the Czech Republic from taking a commanding lead in the best-of-five matchup.
On Sunday at Spiroudome, Wickmayer will meet Kvitova, Flipkens will encounter Zahlavova Strycova and a doubles match currently pits a Belgian tandem of An- sophie Mestach and Alison Van Uytvanck against a Czech duo of Zahlavova Strycova and Iveta Benesova.
The Belgians are playing without former world No. 1 Kim Clijsters this week. The Australian and U.S. Open champion is sidelined with shoulder and ankle injuries.
The Czechs are 1-0 all-time versus Belgium in Fed Cup play. The Czech Republic has never captured the Fed Cup, while the former Czechoslovakia was a five- time champ.
The winner will meet the Italy-Russia victor in the final in November.
