Milos Raonic punched his ticket to the Australian Open's second round Monday by downing Daniel Gimeno-Traver in four sets.

Raonic, the highest ranked Canadian men's tennis player at 11th on the ATP rankings, defeated No. 80 Gimeno-Traver 7-6, 6-1, 4-6, 6-2.

In the sweltering Melbourne heat, Raonic managed 21 aces to Gimeno-Traver's five. The Spaniard didn't help his cause, either, committing 33 unforced errors.

Raonic, a 23-year-old from Thornhill, Ont., will face No. 76 Victor Hanescu of Romania in the second round.
