The Milos Raonic of a few years ago would have been a heavy underdog against Roger Federer.

The Milos Raonic of today, however, seems much more equipped to at least give the Swiss legend a serious battle in Friday’s Wimbledon semifinal (TSN, 11 a.m., approximate time).

In the eyes of longtime tennis analyst and ex-Canadian Davis Cupper Peter Burwash, Raonic, 23, brings a much more well-rounded game to the table — tools that allow the Canadian to have a real shot against the 17-time Grand Slam champion.

“If you’re an oddsmaker and you really know the sport, this is a really even match,” Burwash said in a phone interview from his home in California on Thursday. “When you’re … 32 and even if you’re in great shape like Federer, you’re still facing, a young, hungry powerful guy in Milos.”

The 6-foot-5 Thornhill, Ont., native’s rocket serve, of course, remains his greatest weapon, but you need more than that to compete against the world’s best.
