Canadian Milos Raonic earned his first win over Frenchman Jo-Wilfried Tsonga Thursday to earn a spot in the quarterfinals at the Internazionali BNL d’Italia in Rome.

Raonic downed 11th-seeded Tsonga 7-6 (5), 6-4 to reach the quarters of a Masters 1000 event for the fourth time this year. The eighth-seeded Raonic hit seven aces and saved five break point chances.

In two previous meetings -- in Indian Wells last year and the London Olympics in 2012 -- Tsonga had posted three-set wins over Raonic.

Their encounter at the Olympics saw the final set go 48 games.

Raonic will take on Jeremy Chardy of France Friday.

Chardy beat Croatia’s Ivan Dodig to reach the quarters and upset Roger Federer of Switzerland earlier in the tournament.
