Canadian Milos Raonic advanced to the Japan Open quarter-finals Thursday after defeating Frenchman Jeremy Chardy in straight sets.

Raonic, who is ranked 11th on the ATP Tour and third at the Open, won 6-4 and 6-3 over the 77-minute match, recording 17 aces in the process. It was his 39th match win of the year.

Next up for the Thornhill, Ont., native is a date with Slovakian Lukas Lacko, the 81st-ranked player in the world, on Friday.

Only Juan Martin Del Potro and Jo-Wilfried Tsonga, No. 7 and 8 on the Tour, respectively, are ranked higher than Raonic at the Open. Del Potro has qualified for the quarter-finals, but Tsonga did not make the cut.

Raonic is fresh off his fifth ATP title. He captured the Thailand Open last week.
