CALGARY - It's appropriate that, when Filip Peliwo tries to explain how Canada has emerged as a world tennis power, he evokes the words of this country's biggest hip-hop star.

Peliwo, who reached the round of 32 at last week's Rogers Cup, is currently competing in the Calgary Futures tournament and believes the emergence of Canadian stars is directly tied to the increase in smaller tournaments like the one at the Calgary Tennis Club.

"You have to start from the bottom -- wait, that's a song lyric, isn't it?" Peliwo said, referencing the Drake track Start from the Bottom that's been omni-present on hip-hop radio throughout 2013. "It's true, though. You have to start from the bottom up -- I really didn't even realize what I said there -- but you have to start at the lowest level and build it from there."
