Milos Raonic has seen better days on the court.

The top-ranked Canadian barely squeaked by former world No. 3 Nikolay Davydenko of Russia 7-5, 7-6(5) during first-round action at the Madrid Open Monday.

It was a tough day for the Thornhill, Ont., native as he only hit six aces, had four double faults and had a low first serve percentage of 44%.

Fortunately, Davydenko was unable to break Raonic's serve during the 98-minute match.

Raonic will face Spaniard Fernando Verdasco on Tuesday in second-round action.

Meanwhile, Ottawa's Jesse Levine was defeated 6-2, 6-2 by Kevin Anderson of South Africa after earning a spot in the main draw.
