Milos Raonic of Thornhill, Ont. won his first-round match against Frenchman Julien Benneteau 6-1, 6-4 at the Monte-Carlo Rolex Masters in Monaco Monday.

Benneteau could not keep up with 12th-seeded Raonic, who started the first set with a 5-0 lead and faced no break points. He finished with 15 aces.

"I think it's a very good start," Raonic said on the tournament website. "A lot of things I did well, especially only having a limited amount of preparation before here. Davis Cup was a very good thing, but it was also a very draining thing. It takes a lot of energy to get through that weekend. So I was very happy with how I was able to prepare and play today."

Raonic’s next test will be against Jarkko Nieminen of Finland Wednesday.
