KUALA LUMPUR, MALAYSIA - Only one seeded player saw action Monday at the Malaysian Open, and Austrian Jurgen Melzer came up a loser on Day 1.
Vancouver's Vasek Pospisil was leading the eighth-seeded Melzer 6-4, 2-0 when the veteran Austrian left-hander retired from his opening-round match on the indoor hardcourts at Putra Stadium.
The 31-year-old Melzer became a newlywed earlier this month when he married WTA tennis player Iveta Benesova.
In other opening-round action on Day 1, qualifier Michael Yani bested fellow American Brian Baker 6-3, 7-6 (7-4), Taiwanese wild card Jimmy Wang handled Italian qualifier Riccardo Ghedin 6-3, 6-3 and Dutchman Igor Sijsling whipped Malaysian wild card Ariez Elyaas Deen Heshaam 6-2, 6-1.
This week's top seeds are Spanish star David Ferrer and Argentine Juan Monaco.
Serb Janko Tipsarevic, who is not defending his title this week, beat Cypriot Marcos Baghdatis in last year's Kuala Lumpur finale.
The 2012 winner of this $850,000 tournament will claim $153,400.
