Canadian Milos Raonic will start the U.S. Open against unseeded Santiago Giraldo of Columbia.
Raonic, the 15th seed for the final Grand Slam tournament of the season, learned his first-round opponent during the official draw Thursday in New York. Should he beat Giraldo, he'd play the winner of the match between Paul-Henri Mathieu of France and Igor Andreev of Russia in the second round.
The 21-year-old from Thornhill, Ont., was put in a bracket with third-seeded Andy Murray of Great Britain and Jo-Wilfried Tsonga of France, the No. 5 seed. Raonic got a walkover win against Murray in the Rogers Cup when the Olympic gold medallist pulled out due to a leg injury.
Raonic's half of the draw also includes world No. 1 Roger Federer of Switzerland. Raonic has lost three times to Federer this season.
Aleksandra Wozniak of Blainville, Que., will play Romania's Alexandra Cadantu in the first round. Wozniak is the only Canadian in the main draw.
