Daniel Nestor through to third round of Rogers Cup

TORONTO - Daniel Nestor probably had a little flashback to his junior tennis days Thursday.

Due to rain, Nestor and partner Max Mirnyi were forced to play their first Rogers Cup doubles match against Fabio Fognini and Juan Monaco at the somewhat cramped Mayfair West club in Downsview, not outdoors at the Rexall Centre.

And although they survived with a 6-4, 6-3 win, it wasn't the performance you'd expect from the top seeds in the doubles draw.

"It wasn't the prettiest match," Nestor said. "Just maybe tough conditions ... it was kind of dark in there and no one was really on their game. We just hung in there and served well at the right time and saved some break points on some good serves.

"I didn't mind (playing indoors) considering our opponents. I thought we had an advantage playing against them indoors. I guess it held true."

That said, it wasn't as much of a blowout as the score would suggest.

"Typical doubles match," Nestor said. "Not much difference between the two teams, we just happened to win one or two of the bigger points actually more by luck than playing well."

Lucky or not, the win allowed Nestor and Mirnyi to become the first team to qualify for November's ATP World Tour Finals in London. It's the 14th time Nestor has made it to the year-end finale and he's won it the last two years.

"Yeah, for whatever reason I've had success there the last two years," he said. "I really like playing there. The event is amazing, it's a great place to play.

"Any time you're ranked No. 1 or in a dogfight with the Bryans (Bob and Mike) for that position this late in the season you've done something well. So we're happy to be back and hopefully we can maintain that No. 1 ranking."

Although four other doubles matches were played indoors Thursday, Milos Raonic and Viktor Troicki weren't among them. Troicki withdrew from the tournament, giving fifth-seeded Jurgen Melzer of Austria and Leander Paes of India the walkover win.
