Milos Raonic won a couple of close sets to defeat Philipp Petzschner on Monday at the grass-court Gerry Weber Open in Germany.

Raonic, seeded fifth in the ATP World Tour 250 event in Halle and ranked No. 21 in the world, beat the unseeded German 7-5, 7-6 (7-1) while delivering 19 aces. Petzschner made it to the final of the Gerry Weber tourney last year.

Next up for Raonic will be Ze Zhang of China, who downed Germany's Tobias Kamke 6-4, 7-6 (7-2) in the opening round. A win over Zhang could set up another showdown with Swiss star Roger Federer in the quarterfinals.

Raonic and fellow Canadian Adil Shamasdin of Oakville, Ont., will play Germany's Dustin Brown and Austria's Oliver Marach in men's doubles Tuesday.

Do you think it's a good idea for the U.S. Open to hold the men's final on a Monday?
