DUBAI, United Arab Emirates -- Wimbledon runner-up Tomas Berdych was among Monday's first-round winners at the $2.233 million Dubai Tennis Championships.

The third-seeded Berdych blew past France's Jeremy Chardy 6-2, 6-3, following a brief rain delay, at Dubai Tennis Stadium. Chardy piled up 40 unforced errors in the setback.

"It was really solid," said Berdych, who has been battling the flu. "I was not really aiming for some special and extreme shots. Just try to be as consistent and patient and with not too many mistakes."

A Day-1 upset came when Ukrainian qualifier Sergei Bubka topped fifth-seeded Croat Ivan Ljubicic 6-1, 0-1, as the veteran Ljubicic succumbed to a leg injury. Ljubicic was the Dubai runner-up back in 2005.

Eighth-seeded Latvian Ernests Gulbis advanced with a 6-3, 6-4 decision against German wild card Michael Berrer.

Frenchman Richard Gasquet grounded Bulgarian qualifier Grigor Dimitrov 6-2, 6-4, while rising German Florian Mayer mauled Finn Jarkko Nieminen 6-4, 6-2.

Other opening-round winners were Czech qualifier Lukas Rosol and German Philipp Petzschner.

This week's top seeds are former world No. 1 superstar Roger Federer and Australian Open champion and U.S. Open runner-up Novak Djokovic, who is also the reigning two-time Dubai champ. The four-time Dubai titlist Federer will open up against Indian Somdev Devvarman here on Tuesday, while Djokovic will face French lefthander Michael Llodra.

Djokovic defeated Russian star Mikhail Youzhny, a two-time finalist here, in last year's Dubai finale.

The 2011 Dubai titlist will earn $386,000.
