CHENNAI, India -- Top-seeded Wimbledon runner-up Tomas Berdych and third-seeded 2010 Chennai runner-up Stanislas Wawrinka were among Tuesday's first-round victors at the $450,000 Chennai Open, an Australian Open tuneup.

The 6-foot-5 Czech Berdych blew past helpless Portuguese Frederico Gil 6-0, 6-1 in a blistering 46 minutes, while the Swiss Wawrinka topped Indian wild card Rohan Bopanna 6-4, 6-4 in 67 minutes on the hardcourts at SDAT Tennis Stadium.

Wawrinka lost to Croat Marin Cilic in last year's hard-hitting finale here.

Berdych will meet Croat Ivan Dodig in the second round on Wednesday, while Wawrinka will face Belgian qualifier David Goffin here on Thursday.

Four other seeds saw action on Tuesday, with victories coming for three of them.

Fourth-seeded Richard Gasquet leveled qualifier and fellow Frenchman Edouard Roger-Vasselin 6-1, 6-3, seventh-seeded Belgian Xavier Malisse mauled Turkey's Marsel Ilhan 6-3, 6-1, and eighth-seeded Dutchman Robin Haase overcame Canadian Frank Dancevic 6-7 (6-8), 6-4, 6-4. Malisse captured this tournament back in 2007.

Day-2's lone upset came when Slovenian Blaz Kavcic took out fifth-seeded Frenchman Jeremy Chardy 6-3, 6-2.

Additional opening-round wins came for Goffin, Russian qualifier Alexandre Kudryavtsev, Colombian Alejandro Falla and Japanese qualifier Yuichi Sugita. Goffin erased 2009 Chennai runner-up Somdev Devvarman of India, 6-2, 6-4.

This week's champion will claim $68,850.
