Roddick wins 2011 opener

BRISBANE, Australia -- Second-seeded and defending champion Andy Roddick highlighted Monday's opening-round winners at the 2011 season- opening Brisbane International tennis event.

The eighth-ranked former world No. 1 Roddick handled Australian wild card Marino Matosevic 6-3, 6-2 on the hardcourts at Queensland Tennis Centre. Roddick popped five aces and was broken only once in the easy Day-2 victory.

Roddick, who beat 2009 Brisbane winner Radek Stepanek of the Czech Republic in last year's finale here, will face Ukrainian Alexandr Dolgopolov in the second round at this Aussie Open tune-up.

Another seeded winner on Monday was No. 7 German Florian Mayer, who dispatched Aussie wild card Bernard Tomic 6-2, 6-2.

Colombian Santiago Giraldo drove out former top-10 star Gilles Simon of France 6-2, 6-3.

Additional first-round wins came for the aforementioned Dolgopolov, Poland's Lukasz Kubot and German Michael Berrer.

This week's top seed is French Open runner-up Robin Soderling. The big Swede will open his 2011 campaign against American qualifier Ryan Harrison here on Tuesday.

The Day-3 schedule will also feature matches for third-seeded Spaniard Fernando Verdasco, fourth-seeded American Mardy Fish and fifth-seeded Cypriot Marcos Baghdatis.

The winner of this $474,050 tournament will collect $73,000.
