BERLIN -- Nicolas Kiefer retired from professional tennis on Thursday at the age of 33.

"At the start of the new year, you set yourself targets and I achieved mine on August 11th," Kiefer said on his official website. "With the birth of our daughter Mabelle Emilienne, my greatest wish has been fulfilled. From now on, I would like to accompany and shape this new life. Therefore, after deep thought, I've decided to end my career as a tennis professional."

The German reached a career-high No. 4 ranking on Jan. 10, 2000. Kiefer reached the quarterfinals of the Australian Open and the U.S. Open that year.

The right-hander achieved his best Grand Slam result when he advanced to the Australian Open semis in 2006.

During his 15-year career, Kiefer won six titles and finished runner-up 13 times. His last title came in 2000 in Hong Kong.
