MONTPELLIER, France -- French favourite Richard Gasquet and sixth-seeded Spaniard Albert Montanes were among Monday's first-round winners at the Open Sud de France tennis event.
The seventh-seeded Gasquet fought back to best German Julian Reister 6-7 (8-10), 6-3, 6-3 on the indoor hardcourts at the state-of-the-art Arena. Gasquet captured this event in Lyon back in 2006.
Meanwhile, Montanes topped veteran French favorite Arnaud Clement 6-4, 6-4 and Portugal's Frederico Gil moved on with a 6-4, 2-6, 7-5 victory over Frenchman Edouard Roger-Vasselin. The former Australian Open runner-up Clement captured this French event, in Lyon, 10 years ago.
This week's top seeds are Russian Nikolay Davydenko, Frenchmen Jo-Wilfried Tsonga and Gael Monfils and reigning champion Ivan Ljubicic, who bested France's Michael Llodra in last year's finale, in Lyon. The Croatian Ljubicic also captured this title in 2001.
