STOCKHOLM -- Wimbledon runner-up Tomas Berdych was among Wednesday's second-round losers at the Stockholm Open.

Finnish veteran Jarkko Nieminen, a two-time Stockholm runner-up, ousted the third-seeded Czech Berdych 6-1, 6-4 on the indoor hardcourts at Royal Tennis Hall. The veteran Nieminen was a finalist here back in 2001 and 2006.

Fifth-seeded Swiss Stanislas Wawrinka avoided an upset by holding off Dutchman Robin Haase 7-5, 6-7 (6-8), 6-4 to reach the quarterfinals.

German Florian Mayer also moved into the quarters by handling Swedish wild card Michael Ryderstedt 6-4, 6-4.

Germans Tobias Kamke and qualifier Matthias Bachinger were a pair of opening-round victors on Day 3 here.

On Thursday, second-round matches will come for top-seeded Roger Federer and second-seeded Swedish favorite Robin Soderling. The former world No. 1 Federer will face American Taylor Dent, while the two-time French Open runner-up and two-time Stockholm runner-up Soderling will encounter German Benjamin Becker. Soderling reached finals here in 2003 and 2008.

The 16-time major champion Federer was last week's Shanghai Masters runner-up to Andy Murray, who lost to the super Swiss in this year's Australian Open finale.
