BANGKOK, Thailand -- A pair of top-four seeds, Austrian Jurgen Melzer and Latvian Ernests Gulbis, highlighted Wednesday's second-round winners at the Thailand Open tennis event.

The third-seeded French Open semifinalist Melzer handled Israeli Dudi Sela 6-3, 6-4, while the fourth-seeded Gulbis was tested mightily in a 7-6 (7-4), 6-7 (4-7), 6-4 victory over German veteran Rainer Schuettler on the hardcourts at Impact Arena. Gulbis fired 16 aces and needed 2 hours, 50 minutes to stave off the former Australian Open runner-up Schuettler.

Gulbis will take on Spaniard Guillermo Garcia-Lopez in Friday's quarterfinals.

A mild second-round upset occurred when German Daniel Brands upended sixth- seeded Dutchman Thiemo De Bakker 7-6 (7-2), 1-6, 7-6 (9-7) in 2 hours, 12 minutes. Both players combined for 31 aces, including 18 for the loser.

In some other Day-3 action, Garcia-Lopez snuck past Frenchman Florent Serra 7-5, 6-7 (3-7), 7-5 in the round of 16 and Benjamin Becker bested fellow German Mischa Zverev 6-1, 6-4 in an opening-round affair. Becker will be opposed by second-seeded world No. 8 Spaniard Fernando Verdasco on Thursday.

Top-ranked superstar Rafael Nadal will see his first action of the week here on Thursday when he faces little-known Belgian qualifier Ruben Bemelmans. The high-flying Nadal, who enjoyed a bye into the second round, is the reigning U.S. Open, Wimbledon and French Open champ.

The winner of this $608,500 tournament will claim $99,725.
