Did you know at this year's World Cup each player will get a shiny participation medal so no one's feelings get hurt?

Are you aware it takes five years to paint the pitch's white lines because a FIFA rule states each blade of grass has to be individually painted?

Don't be ashamed if you answered "no" to both questions. In fact, you should be proud of yourself.

These tidbits of information are actually tweets from soccer fans participating in a light-hearted hashtag campaign.

"#FakeWorldCupFacts" trended on Twitter Thursday as the planet anxiously awaited the tournament's first match. The idea was hatched by @midnight, a show on Comedy Central.

Host, Brazil and Croatia meet mid-afternoon on Thursday, at 4 p.m. EST, but clearly the world just couldn't wait.
