Hoax! Japan did not fly in Pokemon plane

So that Pokemon plane we told you about on Wednesday, the one Japan's World Cup side flew to Brazil in?

It's fake.

We were tricked, duped along with other media outlets, including The Sporting News, USA Today, and SB Nation.

Kotaku uncovered the truth in a blog post on Thursday.

As shown in this Reuters photo filed on June 7, the real plane the Samurai Blue traveled in is about as standard as they get:

Another tweet seemed to verify the unofficial World Cup account's original picture:

Although their plane was not decked out in cartoon graphics as first thought, there's no denying Japan's obsession with Pokemon.

The national team's official mascot is Pikachu, the most recognizable Pokemon character.

If you still don’t have a team to cheer for in the World Cup, and are -- or once were -- a hardcore Pokemon fan, Japan is totally your team.

The boys in blue kick off Saturday at 9 p.m. against the Ivory Coast.
